7 ESTA Mistakes That Could Ruin Your Disney World Holiday

After spending months planning your dream Walt Disney World holiday, the last thing you want is a problem at the airport because of an ESTA mistake.

Every year, families spend thousands on flights, hotels and park tickets, only to discover an issue with their travel authorisation at the worst possible moment.

The good news? Most ESTA problems are completely avoidable.

Firstly – What is an ESTA?

An ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is permission to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. If you’re travelling from the UK to Walt Disney World, every member of your family, including babies and children, will need their own approved ESTA before boarding your flight. It’s a simple online application that helps US authorities determine whether you’re eligible to travel without applying for a visa. Think of it as one of the essential items on your Disney holiday checklist, alongside passports, travel insurance and park tickets. But remember it is ‘permission to travel’ not indefinite permission to enter – that decision is made at the immigration point by a US officer.

Here are seven common ESTA mistakes UK families make before their Disney World holiday and how to avoid them.

1. Applying Through an Unofficial Website

One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is applying through a third-party website that charges far more than the official fee.

These websites often appear at the top of search results and can look genuine, but they may charge additional “processing fees” for something you can do yourself in minutes.

Always apply through the official US government ESTA website. At the time of writing I have linked the official website below and the cost is $40.27 per person (September 2026).

Before entering any personal details, double-check you’re on the correct website and not a third-party service.

Top Tip

Bookmark the official ESTA website as soon as you start planning your trip.

2. Waiting Until the Week Before You Travel

Technically, many ESTAs are approved quickly, often within hours. However, that’s not a guarantee.

If your application requires additional checks, leaving it until the last minute could create unnecessary stress before your holiday.

Most travel experts recommend applying as soon as your passports are valid and your travel plans are confirmed and usually before paying any money to book.

ESTAs are valid for two years from the date of issue OR until the passport expires which may be sooner.

Top Tip

Apply at least a few weeks before your Disney holiday, even if you’re travelling months in the future. But my honest advice is apply before you book to ensure you are able to travel on an ESTA. You must answer all the questions honestly when making the application. If you require a visa to travel instead this process can take a considerable amount of time.

3. Entering Passport Details Incorrectly

A single typo could cause major headaches.

Common errors include:

  • Incorrect passport numbers
  • Misspelled names
  • Wrong dates of birth
  • Selecting the wrong country of citizenship

Remember that your ESTA information must match your passport exactly.

Top Tip

Ask another adult to check every detail before submitting the application. TAKE YOUR TIME – don’t rush.

4. Using an Expired Passport

Your ESTA is linked directly to your passport.

If your passport expires and you renew it, your existing ESTA won’t automatically transfer across. New passport = new ESTA.

This catches out more families than you’d think, especially those who book Disney holidays many months in advance.

Top Tip

Check the expiry date on every family member’s passport as soon as you start researching your trip, that way if you need to renew before the ESTA application you can do so.

5. Assuming Children Don’t Need Their Own ESTA

This is one of the most common questions asked by first-time visitors to Disney World.

The answer is simple: every traveller needs their own ESTA.

That includes:

  • Babies
  • Toddlers
  • Children
  • Teenagers

No matter how young they are, they cannot travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program without their own approved ESTA.

Top Tip

Set aside 30 minutes to an hour uninterupted time and complete the whole family’s applications together.

6. Not Checking the Approval Status

Many people submit their application and assume everything is fine.

While most applications are approved, it’s still important to log back in and confirm the final status before travelling.

Finding out at Manchester or Heathrow Airport that your ESTA hasn’t been approved is not how you want to start (and quickly end) your holiday.

Top Tip

Save a screenshot or PDF confirming approval for each family member or print the first page of the ESTA out to bring with you. Please remember its authorisation to TRAVEL and not authorisation to enter the USA.

7. Forgetting to Renew an Old ESTA

ESTAs don’t last forever. Just two years from date of issue.

Some families visit Florida, then return a few years later assuming their previous ESTA is still valid.

If your ESTA has expired, or if you’ve received a new passport since your last visit, you’ll usually need a new application.

Top Tip

Add “Check ESTA validity” to your Disney planning checklist several months before departure.

What to do if the ESTA is denied

Firstly don’t panic! You will need to apply for a VISA instead. This is done through the US embassy and can be a lengthy process. This is why we advise to apply for an ESTA well in advance of travel so that if you need to go down the VISA route instead you have time to start the process.

Final Thoughts

Applying for an ESTA is one of the easiest parts of planning a Disney World holiday, but it’s also one of the most important.

A few minutes spent checking details now can save a huge amount of stress later and help ensure your family’s magical Florida adventure starts exactly as it should.

Before you start counting down to Cinderella Castle, make sure your passports and ESTAs are sorted and approved.

Because the only thing you should be worrying about on holiday is which ride, snack or attraction to enjoy first!
