Walt Disney World Special Events, Festivals & Extra Parties

One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make is assuming Walt Disney World is the same experience year-round. They don’t realise that Walt Disney World has many special events.

Yes, the attractions are always there. Cinderella Castle isn’t going anywhere. Space Mountain will still be launching guests into the dark. But if you’ve only visited during a standard week, you’ve only seen part of what Disney can do.

The real magic often comes during the seasonal events.

Throughout the year, Walt Disney World transforms itself for Halloween, Christmas, festivals, and occasions in a way that few destinations in the world can match. Decorations appear magically overnight, exclusive entertainment arrives, limited-time food takes over menus, and entire parks feel completely different.

Here are the seasonal events I think deserve a place on every Disney fan’s bucket list.

And I’ve also noted their ‘acronym’ . If you’re on any forums or Facebook groups you might have seen Walt Disney World fans love an acronym – you’ll be speaking the language in no time!

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party – MNSSHP

If you’re expecting a typical Halloween event full of scares and haunted houses, you’re looking in the wrong place.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is exactly what the name suggests. It’s Halloween Disney-style. Family style! It’s one of the most talked about Walt Disney World special events.

The event takes place on select nights in Magic Kingdom usually from mid August through to very early November, and allows guests to wear costumes, collect mountains of sweets, enjoy special character meet-and-greets, and experience exclusive entertainment you won’t see during normal park hours.

The biggest highlight is Mickey’s Boo-To-You Halloween Parade. this parade will usually run twice on each party night.

Even guests who normally skip parades often make time for this one. The music is memorable, the performers are outstanding, and seeing Disney villains take centre stage is something you simply don’t get during the rest of the year. As an extra treat if you line up early for the parade you may also catch a glimpse of the famous headless horseman as he rides through the Magic Kingdom.

Another fan favourite is Disney’s Not-So-Spooky Spectacular, which combines fireworks, projections, music and special effects into one of the most entertaining nighttime shows Disney produces. This will happen once each party night – so don’t miss it!

For many Disney veterans, this party isn’t just a fun extra. It’s the reason they visit Walt Disney World in autumn time.

It is an extra charge, so you do need to buy an extra ticket for this event. As you do for most of the extra events.

You can check dates and events at the official Walt Disney World website here.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – MVMCP

If Halloween is fun, Christmas is pure Disney magic.

Magic Kingdom somehow becomes even more beautiful once the Christmas season arrives.

Main Street U.S.A. glows with festive decorations, holiday music fills the air, and guests can enjoy exclusive entertainment available only during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.

One of the biggest draws is Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade.

There’s something special about seeing Disney characters dressed for the holidays while snow falls on Main Street in the middle of Florida. It sounds impossible, yet Disney makes it feel completely natural.

The party also includes holiday fireworks, seasonal treats, special character appearances and shorter attraction wait times compared with many daytime visits.

For many families, this event has become a yearly tradition. After experiencing it once, it’s easy to understand why.

EPCOT Festivals Throughout the Year….

If someone asked me which seasonal events offer the best value throughout the year, I’d point them directly towards EPCOT.

The park hosts multiple festivals annually, and each one brings its own atmosphere, entertainment, food and merchandise. These do not need an extra ticket and festival fun is included for every visitor to Epcot whilst the festival runs.

EPCOT International Festival of the Arts

This festival celebrates creativity in all forms.

Guests can watch artists at work, enjoy Broadway-style performances and sample food that looks almost too impressive to eat.

It usually runs from mid January to late Feb or early March. It often runs for around 40 days. The shortest of the Epcot festivals!

EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival

Spring might just be the most beautiful time to visit Walt Disney World.

Thousands of flowers bloom throughout EPCOT, incredible character topiaries appear across the park, and outdoor kitchens serve seasonal dishes that perfectly complement Florida’s warmer weather.

It’s one of the most photogenic times of the year.

EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival

For many adults, this is the ultimate Disney event, because of all the adult beverages from around the world that are on offer.

However there is always lots for all the family to enjoy. My boys love getting a copy of the festival guide and picking out fun things to try!

Food booths representing countries and cuisines from around the world spread throughout the park, giving guests the chance to sample dishes and drinks they might never normally try. The food on offer is a sample size so you can try a few bits before you’re full!

You can easily spend an entire day eating your way around World Showcase and still not try everything!

EPCOT International Festival of the Holidays

Combining holiday/Christmas time traditions from around the globe with festive entertainment and seasonal food, this festival offers a fascinating look at how different cultures celebrate the season.

It’s both entertaining and educational, which is something EPCOT has always done really well.

Holiday Decorations Across Walt Disney World

Even if you aren’t attending a special ticketed event, the Christmas time decorations alone can make a visit memorable.

Disney doesn’t simply put up a few Christmas trees they transform the whole of Walt Disney World into a magical winter wonderland.

I’ve been lucky enough to visit a few times to see the decorations……..and wow!

Entire resorts, parks and public spaces are transformed.

The Christmas tree at Magic Kingdom is impressive enough on its own, but some of the most stunning decorations can actually be found outside the parks.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort often features an enormous gingerbread display that has become a holiday tradition for returning guests. Other resorts add unique decorations that reflect their own themes and personalities.

Walking between resorts during the Christmas season can feel like a holiday attraction in itself.

The attention to detail is magical.

From festive garlands and wreaths to special music and seasonal scents, Disney creates an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re stepping into a holiday film. Don’t skip out on visiting the other Disney Resorts if you’re there around Christmas time!

Final Thoughts

Seasonal events are one of the reasons Walt Disney World remains a destination people return to again and again.

A summer trip feels completely different from an autumn visit. Halloween has a unique energy and experience. Christmas brings an entirely different atmosphere. EPCOT festivals constantly give returning guests new experiences to discover.

If you’re planning a future holiday and have flexibility with your dates, I wouldn’t just look at crowd calendars or hotel prices. I’d look at the event calendar as well. Sometimes if you’re clever with dates you can overlap two different things and really make the most of it!

Because often the best Disney memories aren’t found on a ride or attraction at all. They’re found when the parks embrace a season and create the kind of magic that only Disney can deliver!
